From the Kitchen: Fried Green Tomatoes

I am always looking for recipes from our ancestors. Not only do I cook meals in our house, I also create medicinal and hygiene items in our kitchen for our own personal uses. As for foods though, I have always enjoyed cooking “American-International” cuisine. I first learned Italian, then Chinese, then Middle Eastern…as well as throwing in some other European recipes in as I find them.

I was in the SCA (Society for Creative Anachronism)…aka a Medieval Reenactment Group…for a number of years. The feasts were PHENOMENAL!!! The food was made from recipes that either were found, or could have been found, back in Medieval times. Granted the ingredients may be a little different due to social/cultural changes, but it’s the point of attempting.

I was just reading an article that states that the popular Fried Green Tomatoes recipe is actually a Native American construct. I was excited to find this. Growing up where I did…we ate these a lot. I was not sure if it was a regional recipe, or something from down south, as my family migrated up here in the 1950’s from the south.

I am going to share the Native recipe I found. I have not yet tried it, as green tomatoes are actually a Summer food, but I will be making these next Summer season.

Fried Green Tomatoes

Fried Green Tomatoes (Cherokee dish)

Ingredients:

  • 3-4 large green tomatoes
  • 2 cups coarse ground yellow cornmeal
  • 1 tbsp. salt
  • Pinch pepper
  • Lard or vegetable oil

Method: Slice the tomatoes into pieces and sprinkle salt over all the slices. Let sit for about ten minutes and then pat the slices dry with some paper towels. In a bowl add the ground cornmeal and dip the slices in it so that they are covered on all sides. In a pan heat some lard or oil and fry the tomatoes until golden brown. Serve with some freshly cut coriander leaves and sour cream to your liking.

I am hoping to continue adding recipes. Though, I will always try to add Seasonal recipes that I have made in the past, or at least before I post them. This one was just serendipitous!

Spells, Prayers, Intention…different words, same meanings. Surprised? Myth vs reality.

When people outside of craft spirituality hear the word Spells, you start hearing a lot of hullaballoo about witches who fly on brooms, wave magic wands, and phrases of “Oh…like Harry Potter.” This is far from the truth of it. I find it sad that people place judgment on others spiritual forms based on mass media and hysterical history. Nature based spirituality has gained so many new members, as well as those who have come out and publicly announced their beliefs, over the last decade per articles I have read in recent years. Since we are growing so quickly, there are so many books, articles, websites, forums, and forms of study we can easily find to try to help ourselves.

But…what are “spells” then? Spells are what standardized religions call Prayers. They are our words, our energy, used with intention, to commune with the universe and set ourselves in motion. Solitary practitioners rely solely on their own prayers. Those of us who are choosing an educational path in our practice, or that are part of a group (i.e. a Band, a Coven, a Grove, etc.) may have organized spells used for learning or for rituals.

One of the largest problems I see with people and spellwork is that they are looking for someone to share a spell for whatever purpose they are working on. Even with religious prayers, most use their own words when praying at home, or at meals, or when alone. Spellwork should be done under this same principle. They should be your words, your energy, your intention. Let’s think about this example. If I am doing a banishing spell for a spirit in my home, or even a cleansing of my home, my situation is going to vary from even my neighbor. They don’t have exactly the same situation I do. So…if I share the words I used, their “power” won’t have the same effect. Needless to say, because they are my words, even someone else using them won’t have the same effect. Your words, emotions, thoughts make your spellwork stronger for your situation.

I am not saying that you can’t go online and look at examples of others’ spellwork to give you ideas. Please do. But, whether you freelance your spells, or write them in a notebook (i.e. grimoire, book of shadows, etc.), make them your own…specific to your situation. Some people need a guide for their words, and possibly those who are newer to their practice.

One last note. When doing spellwork, make sure you are in a positive mindset, cleanse your area, ground yourself, and if you need, create a circle of protection around yourself. Negativity in your mind, in you words, and in your heart can affect your spellwork in ways you may not desire.

P.S. This is coming from someone terrified of Ouija boards. I have never used one and never will. Some say it’s fake, some use them in a lot of their spellwork, but I choose to believe that nothing good can truly come from it. There are far more positive and safe ways to perform spells, in my opinion.

Finding your way…

Being on different pages and seeing fellow nature spiritualists finding themselves makes me go into help mode. I wish to help these people by asking them questions about themselves, life and spiritual experiences, interests, and more. I remember being new to my spirituality. I was confused, overwhelmed, and found myself opening so many tabs and reading so many things. It can be very stressful. Luckily, I had a few friends that already knew where they belonged. I asked them so many questions and read a lot of books and articles they recommended. I am ever so thankful to them for everything they shared with me. I know not everyone has such resources.

Here are some starters. I would recommend getting a notebook and writing down what these make you think about and what you know. Writing things down then going over them again can start to link things. As you find new things, add them to your notes.

  1. Look into your heritage. This is a great start. If you have strong Celtic roots, for example, you may find some things “click” with you. If you are unsure about your heritage, you may start just by honoring your ancestors. They may help you find your way.
  2. Look at your interests. Can your interests tell you anything about yourself? I know I have always had a strong interest in natural healing and all things medical. I also know I have always been keen on saving the Earth. And…I have always adored nature. These were great starters for me. May seem vague, and you may be able to label these things quickly within nature based spirituality, but this was only one factor, of these I am mentioning, that I used to find myself.
  3. Find things you are drawn to. Going to shops and looking around, books and articles you read, what other practitioners have/do, etc. I was drawn to divination and herbology early on. Took years to find an oracle, then tarot deck that called to me. Has taken years of personal study toward learning herbology, which I consider a life long study regardless.
  4. Open yourself up to anything and everything, but stay safe. Once I opened myself up, I found my primary deity and my divination became stronger. Be safe though, as there is always darkness with the light. Ground yourself and always Sage. I will talk about Creating a Safe Space in another article.

These 4 items are a great start! It will take time. Think about what sort of practitioner you would like to be. Some tend to be Traditional, some New Age/Neo, some choose multiple pantheons/deities (or none at all), and some tend to not label themselves and just improve their skills. There is no right answer, no wrong answer. It’s all inside of you!

Salutations!

Welcome to Simple + Craft!

This page serves as a safe haven for people interested or practicing nature based spirituality, a love of nature and landscape photography, and just trying to live simply and with intention.

I have been a nature based practitioner now for over a decade. I am a believer that YOU are your practice, not what you can buy to make things fancy, not any preconceived notions about high expectations, and not what you have to create from others’ words or settings. I will explain all these and more throughout my blog. I also believe that you can do anything you truly set your mind to and live life with intention regardless of obstacles. I know I may make this sound “easy,” but I have a similar to reality to many where I have and have had many struggles and obstacles throughout my life. I work on myself daily, and want to share how others may do it to, though you may find your own ways differ from mine. That is progress and the slower the better. It’s then set with intention and self love.

Again, if there is a topic you would like to see discussed, a question you have, or an idea you would like to see simplified please send me a message. In my first few blogs, I will cover some basics. If any of you have a different perspective, please share, as my posts are based on my experiences and research. All I ask is that you be respectful, kind, and polite. We are all in this together.

I look forward to sharing and hearing from you all. Many blessings!
